The annual list identifies the top hospitals from a rigorous evaluation of over 3,000 hospitals in the U.S., recognizing their excellence in areas such as clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, patient experience, and financial health.
What Is the Fortune/IBM Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals List?
The 100 Top Hospitals list was established by IBM Watson Health in order to measure hospital performance and leadership for thousands of U.S. providers and to help drive improvement. It aims to help identify best practices that may help other healthcare organizations to achieve consistent, balanced, and sustainable high performance. The results are determined using independent and objective research to analyze hospital performance, and organizations do not apply or pay for this honor.
The quantitative study identifies the top-performing hospitals using a balanced scorecard composed of clinical, operational, and financial information based on publicly available data. The top hospitals are identified from a thorough evaluation of 3,134 short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S. The award-winning hospitals and health systems serve as a model of excellence for the industry.
According to IBM Watson Health, the hospitals included on the 100 Top Hospitals list had better results on key clinical and operational performance indicators as compared to similar hospitals. They are reported to have:
- Better survival rates
- Fewer patient complications
- Fewer healthcare-associated infections
- Lower 30-day mortality
- Lower 30-day hospital-wide readmission rates
- Shorter lengths of stay
- Faster throughput in emergency rooms
- Lower inpatient expenses

The annual list was unveiled on Fortune.com in June 2020, and this recognition demonstrates Wooster Community Hospital’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing patient-centered care – particularly during this very disruptive and challenging time of the pandemic.
Bill Sheron, President and CEO of Wooster Community Hospital, stated that he believed this award to be quintessential because “it considers not only how strong your hospital’s performance is in comparison to other U.S. hospitals, but it also demands that you continue to perform better over time.”
He continued to say that not only did Wooster Community Hospital’s scores improve over their high levels from previous years, but that their aggregate score was at the 99.9 percentile, which means that their results were second to none.
The fact that Wooster Community Hospital has now won this award a total of six times – including the last three consecutive years – is a clear and resounding testament to the work carried out by a team of outstanding staff and their continued commitment to improving patient care.
